My common bloopers - 13 - potable

The word edible came into my vocabulary much before potable did. But thanks to public service messages, this word also made its way into my vocabulary. But those messages were largely on hoardings in front of health centres.

I always thought potable comes from pot, and hence was pronounced with a pot at the beginning. Though there might be common Latin etymology in both words (potus or potare), but the pronunciation was very different. The pot in potable is pronounced in a way that rhymes with note. Hence poe-tuh-buhl and not pot-uh-buhl.

Have I totally mastered this word and cleansed my diction of the error. Well, I get it right 75% of the time. So this is not an easy one to get right, if you have been getting it wrong.

But you can surely try, now that you know.
