This is one of those words which even convent educated people get wrong. The correct pronunciation of this word is hane (like lane) - us or heen (like seen) - us. The preferred pronunciation is the former. In Hindi, this would read as हेनस
The common mispronunciation that one hears is he-ni-us (like genius).
