Continuing with my rant regarding the mispronunciation of South Indian Names. One of the most common names on news bulletins (given our security situation) is P Chidambaram. His full name will read as पळनिअप्पन चिदम्बरम् or PaLaniappan Chidambaram (although some would use the version Pazhaniappan too, but since he himselves spells it with an L, we will go with that).
However, most newsreaders (English as well as Hindi) pronounce it routinely as "Chidaambaram". The trigger for this mail was watching Barkha interviewing the home minister in front of invited audience. Chidambaram looked miffed with her. It could be because of the way she mauled his name. Mr Chidaambram, Mr Chidaambram - she went. How disgusting for someone who is looked up to by so many. But then she is merely symptomatic of the lot.

Well if you are reading this and you have missed it so far - it is not Chidaambram or Chidaambaram or anything of that sort. It is and shall remain Chid (rhymes with with)-um (rhymes with yum)-bur (rhymes with fur but with a more prominent vowel sound)-um (rhymes with yum).
